A (700% slower) blast from the past #geekheaven_

Those who were online before ISDN and broadband will remember the sounds of dial-up, you may find the haunting sounds of the video clip at the bottom of this post familiar!

The Pace Nightingale modem - 300/300 or 1200/75, with a hidden BELL option. Geek heaven!

Being an early adopter using single-line bulletin boards and an early Demon customer, I tend to associate the engaged tone with dial-up!

However, as my first modem was an old Pace Nightingale manual dialler I got to know the sounds very well. I could usually identify the speed the modem at the other end was trying to negotiate so I could press the speed button on the modem accordingly.

Oh, how I impressed my friends with this whole new online world I had at my fingertips, thanks to this magic box and my BBC Model B.
