About 5 seconds after turning on this PC it became very noisy. Some PCs will do this – you turn them on and as they boot up the fan runs at full speed. Once booted into Windows the fan will slow down again. Not this one. The fan continued running at full speed, like a jet poised at the end of Manston’s runway, ready to hurtle itself into the air.
A quick peek under the lid revealed the cause – fluff overload in the CPU area.
Back at the workshop it became apparent just how bad it was. You can always identify a smoker’s PC – the dust and fluff is brown and has a slightly sticky consistency. Most PCs are sparkly clean after a blast of compressed air.
After removing the fan from the heat sink I had to scrape the brown coating off the fan blades and out of the heat sink grooves.
When you’re hoovering near your PC, pass the brush attachment over the vents. It won’t keep the inside completely clean but it will prevent quite such a horrific build up!
And the good news – the PC is almost silent now. Just need to work on the smell…
