Our very first newspaper column:
Dear Geek,
I run a small business and am thinking about having a website. But my friend tells me that I should have a blog – should I? And if so, what is it?

Dear Offline,
In most cases, a blog (short for “Web log”) is like an online diary. A way to share information and or events with lots of people.
Us Geeks are obsessed by what Google thinks of our pages.
To ensure that Google keeps visiting your site and updating its index, keep your site fresh with new information. A blog is a very convenient way of doing that. If you do decide to build a website, and you or your web designer set it up so that it is easy for you to update it, you could have a blog page there – just edit the page each time you have a new story.
Alternatively, a great place to set up a blog is www.blogger.com – you can quickly and easily set up your own, free blog here.
Some people even use their blog as their main website, it all depends on the kind of business you do.
You can blog with Facebook, although they call them “Notes”. This can be an excellent way to spread news about – search Facebook for “Dear Geek”!
Blogs don’t have to be for business, most are just ways for people to express what’s going on in their lives. For many, keeping a diary can be a great way of keeping sane. Sharing it in a blog can make you realise that you’re no madder than the rest of the world…
Happy blogging,
Geek x
